What is Included in a Builder’s Clean?

A builder’s clean, also known as an after-builders clean or post-construction clean, has evolved over the last 20 to 30 years. With clients taking a more detailed interest in the whole process of building a home or project, the clean-up job after building has been completed has come under added scrutiny. With budgets tightening across all industries and developers wanting to turn a decent profit, it’s easy to see why the post-construction clean has changed.

Throughout the course of this blog, we will outline what a builder’s clean is, how it differs from other types of cleans, and what the biggest differences in cleaning are over the last 30 years.

What is a Builders Clean?

A builder’s clean is the process of cleaning a property to a high standard after it has recently been constructed. This commonly involves the removal of debris, dust and residue that may have built up over the building phase. It is usually carried out by a professional cleaning company that specialises in post-construction cleaning. It can also be done by the builders themselves in some cases.

How it Differs from a Domestic Clean

A builder’s clean differs from a domestic clean in a few ways. The prior is done once construction has just been completed, with the property unlikely to be furnished at this point. Whereas the domestic cleaning is usually undertaken once furnishings are in, such as kitchen appliances and furniture. A builder’s clean is likely to cover a wider area, whereas a domestic clean can hyper-focus on one area to ensure it is spotless.

What a Post Construction Clean Involves

A post-construction clean includes a range of cleaning tasks, all with the aim of leaving the property in a presentable state. Involved in the post-construction clean-up is:

  • Removal of debris
  • Dusting of worktops
  • Sweeping and mopping of floors
  • Removal of residue and marks on the floor
  • Removal of excess paint around furnishings
  • Window cleaning
  • Label and tape removal
  • Sanitising bathrooms and the kitchen
  • Deep-cleaning of kitchen appliances

It can be a matter of case-by-case when it comes to builders’ cleans. Some will include more, some will include less. It is important to clarify with your developer what is expected from this clean.

How a Builder’s Clean has Changed Over the Years

Over the last 20 to 30 years, the builders’ clean has changed drastically. Previously, this task was carried out by the builders themselves, usually by an apprentice, who would be tasked to go around the property and clean up any fixtures, sweep away excess dust and remove any stray rubbish. In some cases, builders would insist on doing it themselves, as it meant they could ensure their work was portrayed well, and it was something they took pride in.

Fast forward to the present day. It’s not like builders no longer take pride in their work; they are just incredibly busy with a list of priorities. This has resulted in a lot of this work being outsourced to cleaning companies, such as Assertio Services, to come in once construction has been completed and smarten up the place. There may be some smaller building firms out there that continue to do the cleaning themselves, but most now outsource.
